Summer and fall are primetime for exploring our regional parks, whether you’re looking to get away on an adventure, with the family, or on a couples retreat. This month, we’ve planned a few retreats that offer the chance to admire the scenic beauty of the Midwest, no matter your budget or level of camping experience.

Looking to get away from it all? Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area’s remote location is world-renowned for stargazing due to its minimal light pollution. The park hosts an annual star party and Beginner’s Field School for novice stargazers to enjoy the beauty of the night sky to the fullest.

There are plenty of daytime activities in the Valentine area, too. Explore the beauty of the Nebraska Sandhills in the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, floating down the 76-mile Niobrara National Scenic River, and hiking through the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest, all in close proximity to the Merritt Reservoir campgrounds.

Eugene T. Mahoney State Park is a beloved family-friendly destination for campers of all interests. Only 30 minutes southeast of Omaha and full of activities, there’s plenty to keep your family occupied:

  • Kountze Memorial Theater
  • Rock climbing
  • Family Aquatic Center
  • Mini golf
  • Disc golf
  • Fishing
  • Horseback rides
  • Paddleboats
  • Arts & crafts center
  • Observation tower
  • Ropes course
  • Ice skating rink (in the winter)
  • Lodge restaurant

At Mahoney, you can stay in the lodge, a cabin, a tent, or make it a day trip and head home – whichever fits your budget.

Tent camping isn’t your style? Best Nest Farm in Glenwood, Iowa offers a truly unique way to enjoy the beauty of the Loess Hills: Glamping in a covered wagon. The Farm is home to ducks, barn cats, and a pack of alpacas to keep you company during your stay.

Campers can stay in one of two wagons on the property, each equipped with heat, AC, bathrooms, and comfortable beds for up to four guests. The farm sits on 50 quiet acres, with walking trails that will lead you to the lake, alfalfa fields, bee hives, or tree swing.

Living in the Midwest has its perks, as we’re always just a short drive away from nature’s beauty. Did we miss any of your favorite weekend getaways?
